Afterworld

A site-responsive installation working across four named afterlife traditions — Mictlān, Obon, purgatory, and moksha — each presented in its own terms rather than as instances of a universal theme.

Installation Overview

Afterworld is installed across distinct spaces at Presa House Gallery, each devoted to a single afterlife tradition: Mictlān, Obon, purgatory, and moksha. Tapestries, projections, papel-picado window cutouts, and offerings work from the iconography and ritual practice of each tradition. The installation does not propose a shared frame between them.

  • Four named traditions installed in distinct spaces: Mictlān, Obon, purgatory, moksha
  • Hand-fabricated tapestries combining figurative imagery with op-art and papel-picado motifs
  • Cut-paper installations on windows and a glass-floor inset cast colored shadows across each room
  • Marigold and candle offerings staged at the foot of each tradition's tapestry
  • Sound and projection alongside textile work, with the iconography of each tradition kept distinct rather than blended
